Summary

Brilliant really, needs some concentration, no idle reading here! Something for everyone。

When I plucked Sapiens off my bookshelf at home to take along on summer vacation (pre-Covid), I thought I might read a few pages here and there between my demanding schedule of swimming, relaxing, and contemplating my navel。 Instead, I found myself so absorbed in the history of Homo Sapiens that I nearly missed my connecting flight。 It’s that engrossing。By the time I reached page 25 or so I began to feel like Neo in the Matrix。 You know the scene I'm talking about - does he take the red pill or When I plucked Sapiens off my bookshelf at home to take along on summer vacation (pre-Covid), I thought I might read a few pages here and there between my demanding schedule of swimming, relaxing, and contemplating my navel。 Instead, I found myself so absorbed in the history of Homo Sapiens that I nearly missed my connecting flight。 It’s that engrossing。By the time I reached page 25 or so I began to feel like Neo in the Matrix。 You know the scene I'm talking about - does he take the red pill or the blue pill? As someone fascinated by science, history, and anthropology, I fancied myself "in the know" about our long and oft-violent rise to the top of the food chain。 Boy, was I wrong! I simply had no idea how little I knew about who we are and where we come from。It’s human nature to be curious about our origins and Harari explores the topic with such an unusually cogent aperture that it’s impossible not to get swept away。 Besides, he wins extra points from me for his dry wit; such as when he describes a cluster of pyramids as the kind of thing people spent (read: wasted) money on back in the day。 But of all the things I loved most about this book, it's the author’s economical and straightforward writing style that won me over。 Harari writes like a journalist — foregoing lush prose for straightforward language, which makes all the historical facts and information presented much easier to understand and retain。 And he does all this without being condescending or patronizing to the reader。There are a lot of books wafting around out there in the ether that haven't much to say - this isn't one of them。 。。。more

View of history The history of humankind is intriguing。 The viewpoint of history is broad and encapsulates the beginning to present day。 I found it informative。

5/5 Sterne 。。。more

Me oleme lihtsalt üks liik maa peal, suhteliselt hävitav liik。 。。。more

Harari rhetorically asks late in this profound book, "Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don't know what they want?" Ouch。 This book has been on my to-read list since it came out six or seven years ago。 I recall Bill Gates saying it was one of his favorite books ever。 I can see why。 I've never read anything quite like it, but I think it will move me to read Hitchens' "God is Not Great" and Isaacson's "The Code Breaker" as logical sequels very soon。 What Harari rhetorically asks late in this profound book, "Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don't know what they want?" The book is great。 More than analyzing historical and scientific facts, I think it is an analysis of what has shaped and influenced the human being。 It is a very interesting and highly recommended book。

Honestly I read about half of this。 Too much of his opinion is passed off as well researched conclusions from anthropology。 Way more ambitious than Diamonds Guns Germs and Steel in my opinion。 All in all a very interesting take on human history, and how important various improvements are。

Although you may not agree with Harari's views, he presents his thoughts in a very interesting and easy to understand way。 One gets a very different picture of "history"。 Best line after discussing bee's DNA:。。。。"But so far researchers have failed to locate lawyer bees。 Bees don't need lawyers, because there is no danger that they might forget or violate the hive constitution。 The queen does not cheat the cleaner bees of their food, and they never go on strike demanding higher wages。" Although you may not agree with Harari's views, he presents his thoughts in a very interesting and easy to understand way。 One gets a very different picture of "history"。 Best line after discussing bee's DNA:。。。。"But so far researchers have failed to locate lawyer bees。 Bees don't need lawyers, because there is no danger that they might forget or violate the hive constitution。 The queen does not cheat the cleaner bees of their food, and they never go on strike demanding higher wages。" 。。。more

This is in my view one of those books that should be on evey persons reading list simply because it is so good and educational。 The book is about 400 pages long where it takes you from the very beginning of humankind up to present times。 The author wrote the book in an informative and understable way so it is not considered in my point of view a particulary hard book to read nor understand his writings。I can't say stress this enough, i highly recommend reading this book seeing that you will most This is in my view one of those books that should be on evey persons reading list simply because it is so good and educational。 The book is about 400 pages long where it takes you from the very beginning of humankind up to present times。 The author wrote the book in an informative and understable way so it is not considered in my point of view a particulary hard book to read nor understand his writings。I can't say stress this enough, i highly recommend reading this book seeing that you will most likely learn some new thing about the human history that you did not know from before。 。。。more

The timescale was maddening。 The vast leaps of faith from a poorly documented factoid" to a vast an unjustified generalisation continually annoyed me。 If you just want to read something interesting and trendy and not think about how it really hangs together, then this is for you。 For me the spread was too wide and the gaps bigger than my mind could grasp。However the author can have a 5 for self promotion。 The timescale was maddening。 The vast leaps of faith from a poorly documented factoid" to a vast an unjustified generalisation continually annoyed me。 If you just want to read something interesting and trendy and not think about how it really hangs together, then this is for you。 For me the spread was too wide and the gaps bigger than my mind could grasp。However the author can have a 5 for self promotion。 。。。more

It's a fine exploration into the why and what of humankind, but sometimes it presents ideas as its own (when in reality, these come from other authors) or they present theories that have since been debunked。 I'd recommend it to anyone with an inkling of interest in the history of humans though, as Harari has quite the way with words。 It's a fine exploration into the why and what of humankind, but sometimes it presents ideas as its own (when in reality, these come from other authors) or they present theories that have since been debunked。 I'd recommend it to anyone with an inkling of interest in the history of humans though, as Harari has quite the way with words。 。。。more

It took me over two years to finish this, during which I put the book to the side only to pick it back up and start reading it from the very beginning three times!Despite this, I find it a fascinating subject and Harari tells it incredibly well! He gives good examples when things get complicated and just overall tells all these facts about our kind like a well-told story。 Why it took me so long to finish, I have honestly no idea。 Sometimes I am just weird (in a good way, obviously)。

Evangelism for the religion of Secular Humanism, pretending to be science and history。 As much as I would like to tell myself I am someone who can listen to the ideas of people I disagree with, I only have a limited time on this earth。 There’s only so much moronic rambling I can tolerate, especially from an author oozing with antipathy toward humanity。 The author devotes page after page to trying to convince the reader of the truth of his nihilistic world view, all while decrying such things as Evangelism for the religion of Secular Humanism, pretending to be science and history。 As much as I would like to tell myself I am someone who can listen to the ideas of people I disagree with, I only have a limited time on this earth。 There’s only so much moronic rambling I can tolerate, especially from an author oozing with antipathy toward humanity。 The author devotes page after page to trying to convince the reader of the truth of his nihilistic world view, all while decrying such things as ”truth” to be “fictions” we all choose to accept out of convenience。 If that’s your belief so be it。 It isn’t mine, and it certainly isn’t what this book advertises itself as。 。。。more

I was not sure whether I could finish reading this book but I'm glad I did。It was definitely thought provoking and some parts made me feel hopeless, sad and questioned about human beings but what's important is to know what we've been gone through to get to this point and to think about what kind of future we want to create。The Buddhism portion was especially interesting to me。 I've learned a lot from this book and would recommend it to anyone。 I was not sure whether I could finish reading this book but I'm glad I did。It was definitely thought provoking and some parts made me feel hopeless, sad and questioned about human beings but what's important is to know what we've been gone through to get to this point and to think about what kind of future we want to create。The Buddhism portion was especially interesting to me。 I've learned a lot from this book and would recommend it to anyone。 。。。more
